Tyan® 2004 Server Platforms to Implement PCI Express* Technology - Tyan to deliver PCI Express-based Leading Servers in 2004

February 19th, 2003 -
Tyan® Computer announced today its focus on delivery of leading edge server platforms in 2004 that take advantage of PCI Express technology.  Tyan will work with Intel Corporation on implementing servers with PCI Express as the high performance interconnect for chip-to-chip and for dedicated slots.  PCI Express is the industry's next generation "Inside-the-Box" local I/O solution because it breaks through the natural limitations of parallel PCI technology.   As a serial interconnect, PCI Express can offer high bandwidth, low latency, and cost efficiency for servers and workstations.   IT managers will be able to deploy PCI Express-based servers in 2004 that are scalable to support multiple years of system usage.  Intel has previously announced its plans to empower its chipsets with PCI Express technology as part of a transition to the serial I/O technology starting in 2004.

"PCI Express technology provides our servers the "Inside-the-Box" I/O solutions needed for 2004 and beyond.  It will increase our server performance and provide our engineers with more flexibility in server development." said Danny Hsu, Director of Marketing at Tyan.  "Working with Intel on PCI Express-based servers will enable us to deliver industry leading solutions to our customers."

Tyan's announcement is another strong indicator of the growing industry momentum behind PCI Express technology.  With 1.0 PCI Express specifications released to the industry in July 2002, the industry is well underway with development of PCI Express products for the 2004 server, workstation, desktop, mobile, and communication segments.

"PCI Express technology unleashes I/O performance on Intel Architecture server platforms," said Hemant Dhulla, director of chipset marketing for Intel's Enterprise Platform Group. "Intel's broad PCI Express product plans include delivery of PCI Express technology to servers in 2004.  We are pleased that Tyan is delivering time to market PCI Express-based servers."

With the demands of emerging computing models exceeding the capabilities of the traditional PCI bus there is a need for much greater internal system bandwidth and rich feature set for the next decade. The PCI Express architecture offers a high-speed, general-purpose, serial I/O interconnect for computing and communications that provides a unifying standard, consolidating the number of I/O interconnects within a platform. PCI Express architecture provides bandwidth scalability from 2.5 Gigabits per second and higher over time; support for multiple widths (lanes) of 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 16 and 32; support for multiple market segments; desktop, mobile, server and communications; and cost effective solutions including a low pin count interface offering maximum bandwidth per pin, reducing cost and enabling innovative form factors.

The PCI Express specification was finalized in July. More information about the PCI Details can be found at
