CPU - Intel Pentium II | Intel P 4 | Intel P III | Intel P II | Intel Celeron | Intel Xeon | AMD Athlon / Duron | Overview
The IntelŪ PentiumŪ II incorporates a dual independent bus architecture to deal
with bandwidth limitations. Composed of the L2 cache bus and the processor-to- main-memory system bus, this architecture facitilitates a simultaneous and
parallel data access from both buses by the processor. As a result, bandwidth performance is three times that of a single bus architecture. The dual
independent bus architecture is designed to support the 100MHz system bus for high-performance processing power. Intelīs BX and GX chipsets support the Pentium II processor.
Processor Features
- The Pentium II utilizes features of P6 microarchitecture (namely a multi-transaction bus, Dynamic Execution performance, and Intel MMX)
- Dual Independent Bus architecture
- 66MHz or 100MHz system bus
- Sing Edge Conact Cartridge packaging technology
- 512K unified, non-blocking L2 Cache
- 233MHz through 450MHz clock speeds
Intel MMX Technology
Also incorporated into the Pentium II is Intelīs MMX technology. This technology
is designed to enhance image & video compression/ decompression, as well as encryption and I/O processing used in a wide range of business media, office
suites, and communication applications. Intel created the Single Instruction Multiple Data process allowing for a single instruction to perform the same function on various pieces of data.
Pentium II Form Factors
There are two types of Pentium II form factor - SECC and SECC2. The acronym stands for Single Edge Contact Cartridge
. The SECC Pentium II is only slightly different from the SECC2 Pentium II. Both form factors feature the 242-contact slot connector. In the SECC2, the thermal plate is removed, allowing
for better PBSRAM cooling via a direct thermal interface with the processor core.
