Thunder i860 (S2603) FAQ Updated 07/08/03
 

  1. How do I install my Thunder i860?

    Download and read the " Readme File" first on installation of the CPU's, PWT Cooling Devices, RIMM's and power supply.  Read through the manual to make sure you are properly installing the Thunder i860.  Otherwise you will run the risk of damaging your board or components.  Once installation is complete you must use the enclosed TYAN Driver CD to install the proper drivers for the motherboard.  Simply follow the menu that appears when the CD is used and select the correct model number for your motherboard.  Then select each driver listed in that field for installation.
     
  2. Is there any power supply, chassis, or cooling recommendations?

    Yes!  Please check here for details and listings.
     
  3. My PWT Cooling Devices will not install on my motherboard.  Any fix?

    The PWT Cooling Devices are not designed to run in the same parallel direction.  They are designed to run parrellel but face out in opposite directions.  Intel has helped with the design of this motherboard so it will definatly work correctly if installed in this manner and the IDE cables used are firmly pressed down flat so that the PWT will fit over them properly.
     
  4. Any special instructions for the 4 GB memory support?

    Yes, please update the bios on your motherboard if your version does not match the latest version available.
     
  5. I have 4 GB of memory and Windows NT will give an error message "Bios is not fully ACPI compliant."  How do I fix this?

    You will need to uninstall one RDRAM module and then install Windows NT 4.0.  After you have completed the install of Windows NT you can re-install the RDRAM module.
     
  6. I have 4 GB of memory installed but the memory count shows a number less than 4 GB.  How do I fix this?

    The memory count is dependent on the type of AGP video card installed or the amount of PCI cards installed.  Each AGP video card and PCI cards requires a different amount of memory to be allocated to its use upon bootup.  This amount will vary between brand and types of video cards and PCI cards.
     
  7. I see J36, a 3 pin FAN header, in the manual but it is not on the motherboard.  Has it been moved?

    J36 was not included in the production version of the S2603 due to the fact that many chassis vendors were not supporting a third FAN header for the front of the chassis.
     
  8. What is J59 or Where is CHASSIS INTRUSION header on the S2603?

    * J59 (located near FLOPPY CONNECTOR) is a 4-pin header for CHASSIS INTRUSION function. The following is the pin out:

    PIN1 - INTRUSION
    PIN2 - GROUND
    PIN3 - N/C
    PIN4 - N/C
     
  9. Why does the system only show 3.5 GB of memory when I have 4.0 GB of memory installed?

    Under the current PC memory addressing, there is a memory area just below 4.0 GB which is reserved permanently.  The reserved area is for system BIOS to put APIC, ACPI Table, PCI Devices', Resources and AGP aperture information.  When your system DRAM is 3.5 GB or lower, the system will show that the same amount of memory has been implemented.  However, if the system DRAM is above 3.5 GB of memory, the actual amount of memory that the system shows will be less due to the reserved area.  Regardless of memory size, the reserved memory addressing is always present, but only when the DRAM rises above the 3.5 GB amount will that area become visible.
     
  10. Why does my memory test program lock up when I use 4.0 GB of memory but runs fine with anything less?

    The memory test utility accesses the reserved memory address area.  When the program accesses this area, it causes the system to be unstable and locks up.
